mendoza, beautiful tasty mendoza!

nessled at the foot of the andies lies mendoza - about 14 hours by bus from buenos aries.  although my stay here was only short, i did still manage to "squeeze" in 7 wineries and 9 bottles of wine.  i think the tasting may have taken its toll and i wasn't quite thinking logistics through!

never have i seen such magical settings for a winery.  snow capped mountains that look like they have been  painted in.  day 1 was a tour to the local wineries - nice wines, but nothing that made me want to buy.  i must say though the first winery was quite impressive, the other two ok.  the last - my good, bugger the wine and just go for the food!  yummo

day 2, well, it didn't start so well.  as many of you will now know, jimmy had passed away that morning (well, morning my time).  faced with two choices - stay at the hostel and do nothing or go on the tour i had booked, i am sure you can tell what i went for.  and what can i say about what i saw.  i can't, so here's a pic of it - amazing.

From mendoza

fortunately it was only a small group - three south australians who grow grapes in the barossa and make wine, me and out guide Majo. Majo was fantastic and knew so much about wine - amazing. As this was a slightly more exclusive tour (given the company one would hope so), the top shelf bottles were happily opened and shared. We also had exclusive access to the vineyards at the time. They were just amazing - cellars like you can't even imagine and buildings that looked to be out of this world.

Anyway, I shan't bore you all any longer with these tales, i must admit the heart is hardly in it. I'm now in BA and have gotten off the backpacker trail for a few days - yes, I have gone for a hotel again - good view of the park!! revised schedule has me home this sunday.

not sure if i will blog again, so thanks to those that have read this, perhaps it has given you all a taste for argentina. as the saying goes, there is always a silver lining ... for me in this case it is "having" to come back here sometime soon to reuse the return ticket qantas wouldn't change. i think in this case they have done me a favour - no reason not to come back here now!

hasta luego mi amigos.
