what do these things have in common? they're a source of great fun. i've now left salta and am chilling for a day or two in cordoba before heading to mendoza tomorrow evening. bus rides here are unlike those in other places, leather recliner seats, meals with wine for dinner, coffee and tea in the morning. they're also a good time to sit and ponder the happenings of the days that have just passed.
long ago i recall a discussion with a certain irish friend who aptly pointed out american's rarely introduce themselves as american, rather they tell you the state they are from. their assumption being we are all well versed in the cities and states of america. so, putting the theory to the test .... a young lad (both terms used loosely here) happened to be checking into the hostel. jessica, my new found canadian friend who had been briefed on the "states phenomenon", asked said lad where he was from - "san francisco" he replies as if on queue. with a wry look we both ask, "where's that?" almost stunned silence greeting our response. later that evening i had a chance to talk to san francisco about his response. "but everyone knows where san francisco is" he enlightens me. i wonder if san francisco knew that just miles up the road there was another town called - oh yes, san francisco. i decided then there was no use trying to explain - he was after all an american.
as for booby pins and kids books, i think i will have to fill in those that are interested when i get back. needless to say, these things when combined with the amusement from the above lead to a great night of laughter with pizza in a downtown market shared with two friends - jessica mentioned above and estefan the crazy argentinian. as is always the way, they were heading north to bolivia and i south to mendoza. somehow though i get the feeling our paths may just cross again.
