guatemala, it has it all. except turtles. apparently there are no turtles anywhere in the world - at least thats what i am now telling myself ... whatever gets you through the night as they say!
the last of panama and most of costa rica turned out to be a turtle goose chase ... yes you read right, a turtle goose chase, it is as likely that there are tutrles geese as there are turtles on the coast of costa rica! but it was a fun (read into that - harrowing) few days of bus and boat travel. while there was plenty of time for bird watchingm there were certainly no turtles!
so, over beers in san jose, it was said ... bring on guatemal. and here we are! so far this country has been amaziing. the markets are to die for, and the volcanoes to die in! yesterday was a brilliant trip up to the volcan de pacaya, the most active volcano in the country. having been lead on turtle goose chases, i must admit i had my dounts, but as the photos will show, it was most definitely active, and most definitely worth the agonising climb (ask colm it seems i am a whimp!) to get there and see it!
imagine it, volcanic rock, days old, rivers of lava running under your feet, and active volcanic rock sliding down the mountain in front of you ... it is certainly one of the most amazing natural sights i have seen!
ok enough ... i´ll stop now!!
next on the agenda is a totrurous 4aqm wake up call to head to tikal, more ruins ... then back here to antigua before heading to largo atitalan - hopefully for altitude diving ... then back here to antigua before heading home.
ok, will only tell you all, because you are my friends, this is a country you have to see - but dont tell anyone else, there will be too many merkins here before you know it!
carry on (as they say)
