well, mexico, what can i say. lots, but i´ll try not to bore people too much, for the abridged version, i think colm´s will cover that!!
the food
i dont think i could ever get tired of it. the food here is great. mexican for breakfast lunch and dinner ...
the weather
it´s hot, damn hot! but all good for the holiday tan! colm however is still quite ... pasty looking
the people
very friendly, and quite helpful, more hawkers than you can poke a stick at though!
the travel
lots of long bus rides to get places. but comfortable buses at least.
the good stuff
mexico city - football
attempted to go and see a football match, it was the two mexico city teams. got up early, had everything we needed, tickets were still available the day before, so off we went. had to stalk some fans to work out where the heck the stadium was, i´m sure they thought we were backpacking muggers. found the stadium and the number of people there left a carlton collingwood game at the G for dead! the number of people were only out numbered by the number of police in full riot gear. while we didn´t manage to get into the game (no bolletes) just watching the craziness of it all was good fun. jules and carl - a note for your match in spain, don´t wear any belts or take any bags - they were having to check belts in at the gates!!
mexico city - art
popped into the frieda kahlo museum - found a sculpture that looks a little like colm on a good day - it´s in the mexico photo section if you want to check it out!
mexico - teotihuacan (pirámide)
the third largest pyramid in the world happens to be just outside mexico city, the sun temple at teotihuacan is an impressive site to see, and once again i am remembering just how much i hate steps.
mexico - palenque, misoja and agua azul
from mexico city it was a 14 hour bus ride to palenque where we popped in to see the myan ruins. photos of that one still to come ... we also did a stop by to agua azul, fantastic cascading waterfalls that really need to be seen - they are quite impressive indeed and to misoja, a fantastic waterfall.
mexico - cozumel
as if 14 hours on a bys wasn´t enough, we decided another big ride was in order. so from palenque it was another 12 hr bus and boat ride to get to cozumel. half way through the bus trip we were stopped in the middle of the night, pulled over and asked to get off the bus by a military officer. all our bags had been taken out and they wanted to search them. colm has been traveling with a bag of white stuff for the last week, luckily they didnt find it, but had they he would have needed his best spanish to explain that it was wasjing powder - i wanted to see them taste it!!!
cozumel is regarded as one of the best dive sites in the world, both colm and i were pretty excited about getting here. we have since learnt though that cozumel is a haven for caribbean cruise ships - so far in the two and a bit days we have been here there have been about 7 of the damn things. we have however learnt that to survive with that many of the worst travellers in the one spot - don´t go near the foreshore during the day! we have also found here the best bar to date - it´s called fish and it´s as mexican as you can get. and we have also found an italian waiters - mexican style called al foco. staff and food - both great!
on diving - it was great fun! i missed the turtle - rah, but did get to see the biggest shark to date - about 2 - 2.5m nurse shark. also a cool ray, and loads of really cool fish.
so next to tullum and the hammock that awaits on the beach .... ah yes, it´s a hard life for some!!
